Home Movies was created by stand-up comic Brendon Small and
Loren Bouchard (producer, Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist)
and also features Paula Poundstone. Currently in its fourth
season, the series chronicles the filmmaking efforts of Brendon
Small, a restless but creative fourth-grade videographer, and
his best pals Jason and Melissa. The Home Movies DVD includes
nine commentary tracks with Small, Bouchard, and Jon Benjamin
(voice of Jason and Coach McGuirk), and also features the animators,
an animation gallery, storyboard animatics, in-depth interviews
with cast and crew, and two of Brendon Small’s actual
home-made movies. Animated menus and buried treasures round
out the playful (in a twisted way) discs.
Comedian and series co-creator Brendon Small brings us the
story of a filmmaker of the same name in the guise of an eight-year-old
would-be Scorsese. Living with his recently divorced and slightly
alcoholic mother (Poundstone), Brendon passes the time making
movies and getting advice from eternal frat boy soccer coach
McGuirk. Although intended to be serious cinematic masterpieces,
Brendon’s movies often bare a striking resemblance to
other well-known cinematic fare. The 13, half-hour episodes
of the first season are animated in Squigglevision? and full
of insight, surprises, and most of all, laughs. The show’s
unique, improvisational writing style – known as retroscripting
– quickly separated it from other animated series, becoming
a favorite among critics and fans alike. A winner of two prestigious
television animation awards*, the show has been called “a
cult fave home run” (Los Angeles Times) and “one
of the funniest sitcoms anywhere on television” (Time).
